Hangar 9 Piper J-3 Cub 40

  • ARF assembled early Spring 2010
  • Magnum 70 4-Stroke engine from LT-40 installed
  • Mounting engine required rotation of the engine mount to accommodate muffler
  • Required 2.1 oz in tail to balance
  • Intended to maiden on May 10th, but could not get low idle slow enough to safely taxi; problem is apparently combination of inverted engine installation and fuel tank height; planning to install onboard glow driver
  • Onboard glow driver only helped incrementally, did not solve problem
  • Ended up getting 4 flights on plane, but had to kill the engine and land dead stick each time
  • Between engine and receiver problems became so frustrated that I decided to trade plane in to local shop and dump engine on ebay
  • Nothing was with the Cub, it was a beautiful kit; but weight was epoxied into the tail to balance with a 4 stroke and I was tired of tinkering with 4 strokes
  • Plane traded in on 5-20-2010
